ACRE Approved Supported Employment Online Course

Course Format

  • Course materials are posted as pre-recorded audio and video lectures, handouts, and web links. All instruction is online and asynchronous, which means that participants are not required to be online at any specific time of the day. Transcripts are provided for accessibility and individual accommodations are available if needed.
  • Participants are expected to check their email regularly to receive instructions for course completion. In general, all communication occurs between the instructors and participants in email. A course syllabus is also provided with course assignment instructions and due dates. The instructors for the course may schedule zoom meetings to discuss the course content.
  • The course content is divided into six modules. Content for each module will be available by 8 a.m. ET. on the first date listed for a module to begin and remain available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Each module lasts for two weeks and should take approximately eight hours to complete. 
  • All participants will be required to post in a discussion that is online in a group forum as well as written assignments. These written assignments must be submitted to the course instructors for feedback.

Staff Time Requirements and CRCs

  • The total time staff should plan for this course is 40 hours: eight hours per each of the modules.
  • There will be a quiz for each module (six in total), which participants must pass with a minimum of 80%.
  • Participants can earn 40 CRCs upon course completion. They must finish all required assignments within the specified time frame to be eligible to receive CRCs.
  • Participants also must complete all course requirements to receive the ACRE Basic Certificate of Achievement in Employment Services.

Learning Objectives

As a result of taking this online course, a participant will be able to:

  • Discuss the federal policy and historical overview of supported employment.
  • Define the components of a customer profile to include situational assessments, vocational evaluations, and functional resumes.
  • Describe Discovery.
  • Illustrate an understanding of job development for career paths by developing a job search plan for a potential supported employment customer.
  • Match a customer’s strengths with the prospective employer’s business needs.
  • Discuss the various job-site training strategies (e.g., natural cues, workplace supports, compensatory strategies, instructional strategies, assistive technology) and their applications.
  • Define the features of a high-quality, long-term support plan.
  • Describe the various alternative funding sources for supported employment.
  • Discuss the differences between SSI and SSDI.
  • Discuss the impact of working on benefits.
